(Miramar, FL -- June 10, 2021) The national political action committee that backed Congress Members Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Cory Bush and Jamaal Bowman -- and, indeed, helped make them household names – has endorsed Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick in the special election to replace the late Alcee Hastings in Florida's District 20. “It is truly humbling to be entrusted with this honor and to stand in the same company with such notable, progressive leaders,” Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick said. “This is only the beginning. I can’t wait to continue to work with Brand New Congress to bring important issues to the floor and pass meaningful legislation that will help families coast to coast.” The mission of Brand New Congress is to elect candidates "who put people before party, to make government more accountable and responsive to the needs of all Americans.” In their tweet announcing the endorsement this week, the PAC said Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is the one to do that: "Sheila is ready to fight for the people of Florida's 20th Congressional District and, with your help, she can win." Brand New Congress chose Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick from a field of 12 candidates -- including several elected officials -- who have expressed their intent to run for the seat vacated by the veteran lawmaker, who died in April. “We feel this is a reflection of their strong belief that Sheila has the vision and the momentum to win this super competitive race,” said her campaign manager, Willis Howard. Perhaps that is because Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick already got tens of thousands of the District’s voters to support her just last year. They know her. They like her. This is the second national progressive endorsement that Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has earned since announcing her candidacy earlier this year. Best-selling author and 2020 presidential candidate Marianne Williamson has also thrown her weight behind the Miramar mom and business owner. “Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has a solid track record of service that has prepared her to deal with the most crucial problems facing voters in South Florida. Healthcare, criminal justice reform, climate change and more,” Williamson said. "The momentum behind our campaign is growing and receiving national attention from powerhouses that put people first," said Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who would be the first Democrat Haitian-American elected to Congress. The primary for the special election is Nov. 2. The general election is Jan. 11, 2022. Know more: Visit www.sheilaforcongress.com or email comms@sheilaforcongress.com.
